The Antioch Baptist Church was
organized on October 26, 1877. The first building was built simply
of logs. It was constructed for union services and financed by the
people of the local community. There is no record of the date on
which the first church was built, but there have been a total of
four buildings.
The
community built the second structure, a frame building, in 1895, for
Union services. Older residents say this building was dedicated in
1906. Based on the recorded minutes it is concluded that the
Baptists also held services in the log building from 1877 to 1895.
The third
building, dedicated on March 25, 1962, was located on Highway 70 at
Knob Lick, which was formerly called Antioch. This building had its
beginning in the hearts of God's people. With the dedicated
leadership of pastor James Jones, on March 23, 1958 interest in the
new church began to grow. With much sacrifice and faith, the first
service was held in the new building on the fourth Sunday of March
1959.
On Thursday
morning, December 6, 1984, the Antioch Baptist Church burned to the
ground. The fire completely destroyed everything. On
Friday, the pastor and deacons announced plans to rebuild and also
to find a place to hold services while a new church was being
constructed. Offers came in immediately of places to worship. After
much prayer, it was decided to use the Freddie Polson Duplex. The
pastor and deacons did not want to disturb the worship services of
the other churches.
Under the
leadership of Brother Keith Murphy, construction of the new church
began. Although the building was not finished, the first service
was held in the new sanctuary on October 20, 1985. Bro. Murphy
preached from the Gospel of Matthew 28:18-20.
God has
blessed the services in the new church and it has grown. There have
been additions and losses as in all churches, but we continue to
strive to win all people to Christ.
